Grant Description
Over the summer, I made it my goal to write a solo acoustic album, and I immediately got to work, spending many hours each day writing and creating new music. However, I do not have any of the equipment required to replicate the recording setups we have been doing, and a huge part of the acoustic guitar sound revolves around a stereo mic setup.

Grant Description
This project will consist of a 4-song, all original E.P. The genre will be primarily modern
jazz with hints of fusion and world music. The songs will be primarily instrumental and focus on tonality and meter we don’t hear in popular music today. My stylistic experience in metrically modulating rhythms and shifting modal harmonies will center the album, but each song will be focused on a different aspect of these ideas.

Grant Description
Last year, for my 3rd year arts award, I recorded an E.P. “Comet” of 4 original songs. The project was a huge success, and I’d like to propose a similar project for this year, but with new music and a new vision.

Tyler Burkhardt is a guitarist from Chesterfield, VA who started playing at age 13. Soon after, he joined his middle school jazz band, and instantly fell in love with the music and jazz. In 8th grade, he was asked to play for the musical "Rock of Ages", at the local high school, and was given an award for "Outstanding Young Musician". Later, he joined the high school jazz band, show band, and marching band where he would go on to become Show Band Leader as well as Drum Major. In his senior year of high school, he was selected as the 1st char All-VA Jazz Ensemble guitarist, and he performed with Wycliffe Gordon at the Homestead. He spent a lot of time making his own music, gigging around Richmond, and looking for new opportunities in music. At UVA, he is involved in the Jazz Ensemble, as well as the Jazz Chamber groups, and he enjoys playing at venues around Charlottesville. Besides playing guitar, he enjoys a healthy dose of tennis, computers, and retro gaming.
