Disciplines(s)
Grant Description
The research I am conducting will be multidisciplinary drawing on skills from performance studies, ethnography, administration, and theatre arts. I will serve in the role of producer, stage manager, and director for the theatre piece that the students create. Additionally, I will work as a teacher to pass on my knowledge of Theatre of the Oppressed to the students. The beauty of Theatre of the Oppressed is that it is devised theatre, so there is no need to purchase rights to a show.

I hope to accomplish these goals through attending a Joker Training Workshop through Theater of the Oppressed NYC. I then intend to conduct more research on the methodology, keeping in mind the goal to present a mini workshop at UVA in order to explore the connection between the social issues that the university faces and theater. I hope to apply the knowledge acquired through attending this workshop and conducting research into Theater of the Oppressed by eventually creating a devised piece at UVA which responds to the social and political issues that the university faces.

Emily Schmid has had a love of theater ever since her first role as billy goat number three in her 2nd grade musical "Three of a kind". Her roles have matured as she grew older, and after exploring theater through acting, participating in tech, and stage managing she has found her passion in playwriting. She is obsessed with stories and the various different ways people tell them. She participated in the School of the Performance Arts for the Richmond Community's New Voices for the Theater program where she got to see one of her works come to life in a staged reading. She then went on to direct her own play as part of her senior class's Spring One-Act Festival. She also served as lead writer on a devised piece that was taken to the Virginia High School League's one act competition. Emily is interested in pursuing more devised theater work and exploring the intersection between movement and stage as well as researching Theater of the Oppressed.
