Grant Description
In February of 2022 the Flute Society of Washington will hold the Mid-Atlantic Flute Convention, which consists of two days of masterclasses, concerts, and competitions involving people across a seven state region. I am interested in attending the convention and applying to some of the competitions. I am primarily interested in the Collegiate Soloist Competition and the Guest Artist Masterclass Performers competition. Thus, I would like to request a mini grant to fund the competition application fees, the fees to hire an accompanist, and funds for the equipment to make a high quality audition recording.

My request is to commission a work by a living composer whose work I have enjoyed. This would be a two- to three-minute work for solo flute that I would perform at my senior recital in April 2024. The composer I have selected is Judy Nishimura, whose work I greatly enjoyed when I played her Mood Swings from the 21st Century Masterworks: Eleven Pieces for Flute Alone book.

Grant Description
For many years, I have wanted to attend the National Flute Association Convention, which would involve a similar kind of rich educational experience, but on a much larger scale. This year’s convention is being held at the Hilton Downtown in Chicago, Illinois, and for my rising third-year arts award, I would love to request funding to be able to attend this convention.

Exploring Music in the Birthplace of Jazz

Cassie Lipton grew up in Hillsborough, North Carolina, and started playing flute at the age of 11. She has been heavily involved in music ever since. In high school, she was a member of the wind ensemble, the marching band, and the jazz ensemble (for which she also learned tenor saxophone). In marching band, she was Flute Section Leader her junior year and Hornline Captain her senior year. She participated in the Central All-District Band for three years, including as principal chair her senior year. During that year she was also selected to participate in the North Carolina All-State Band. Cassie participated in the North Carolina Youth Wind Ensemble for the 2019 and 2020 touring seasons as one of three rotating principal chairs. She was also a finalist and 3rd place winner for the South Carolina Flute Society Senior Artist competition her sophomore year in high school. At UVA, Cassie studies flute under Kelly Sulick. She is currently a member of the Cavalier Marching Band, the Charlottesville Symphony, and a jazz chamber ensemble. Cassie is excited to be a member of the Miller Arts Scholars program and to further her knowledge and experience in music.
