I am requesting a Minigrant to help fund the education and equipment I need to explore this medium of dramatic writing and production. The most integral expense to this project is a highly-rated online class called “How to Start a Podcast” from an arts education service called Creative Live. This course has four different sections “Podcasting 101,” “Essential Storytelling Techniques,” “Start Your Profitable Podcast & Build a Brand,” and “Power Your Podcast with Storytelling.”

Grant Description
I am currently in the process of applying to several summer theatre internships, the majority of which are located in Washington, D.C. My top choice is a part-time literary internship at Studio Theatre. As a literary intern, I would be compiling dramaturgical research on current and upcoming shows, analyzing scripts for upcoming seasons, and assisting with various writing and editing assignments for the Studio Theatre Literary Department. This internship is unpaid, however I would be provided with a monthly metro card, complimentary tickets, opportunities to attend educational seminars led by the theatre professionals who work there, and half-price tuition for classes and workshops at the Studio Theatre Acting Conservatory. The application for this particular internship is due on March 23rd, so it is unlikely that I will know about my acceptance until mid-April.

Grant Description
I am currently in the process of applying to full-time (40+ hours per week) internships located in various cities across the United States. Since many theatres do not have a dramaturgy-specific internship available, there are three types of dramaturgy-related internships that I am applying for: Literary Intern, Community Engagement Intern, and Education Intern. Every theatre defines these positions differently, but each position is similar in that it encompasses primarily dramaturgical elements.

Dramaturgy and Community Engagement at a Professional Theatre

Savannah Maive Edwards is a child of the mountains, having been raised in both the Adirondacks and the Blue Ridge. Consequently, she has always had a natural inclination to tell stories. For most of her childhood, Savannah indulged her innate passion for storytelling through writing short stories, plays, and screenplays, which she would coerce her friends to read and costar in (all of which are now hidden deep within the abyss of time). It wasn’t until her family pulled up the stakes and moved to Nelson County, Virginia, that Savannah finally found her way onto the stage and has since refused to get off. Since entering the University of Virginia, Savannah has found her home in the drama department as an actor, writer, and director, and has been involved in many drama department and student theatre productions over the past couple of years. She has also found another home at Live Arts, the community theatre downtown, where she has worked as a camp counselor for the past two summers. Thanks to support from the Miller Arts Scholars, she acquired a third home at Studio Theatre in Washington, D.C., where she spent part of her summer studying acting and working as an education administration intern. Savannah is grateful to have had so many opportunities to cultivate her artistry as a Miller Arts Scholar, and is grateful to be able to explore her role as an artist with each passing day.
