Grant Description
I am proposing a project that will span to the end of the fall semester. I am requesting funds to help purchase a Wacom Intuos Pro Paper drawing tablet. This tool allows artists to have editable digital files of artwork without compromising the familiar pen to paper process of creating. For my project, I will create a series of six digital paintings that will explore the potential of merging traditional and digital materials. I will closely document my artistic process to provide a clear picture of the utilization of these materials. Adobe Photoshop software will be used to compile and edit my artwork via tablet.

Grant Description
I am proposing to attend the workshop Fiber to Form: Sculpting with Paper at Anderson Ranch. During this week-long workshop, I will learn how to create paper sculptures using casting and folding techniques from Kozo fiber. I am especially interested in the casting technique, as I have used this method in my sculpture classes to create clay and plaster molds. Here, I will able to apply my previous mold-making experience within a new context.

Isabella Whitfield, an artist from Centreville Virginia, is interested in exploring the themes of social connection and contemporary society. In February 2018, she was commissioned as a portrait artist by the Bridge Progressive Arts Initiative for the exhibition, Face to Face: Portraits of Our Vibrant City. This innovative project, aimed at uniting diverse communities, teamed up ten portrait artists with Charlottesville community members. Isabella is also involved with a number of graphic design positions at UVA. Currently, she is part of the design team for UVA’s Media Studies research journal, Movable Type. Additionally, she enjoys creating promotional visual content for University Programs Council as a part of the Marketing Committee. Through a grant from the Student Arts Fund, she is currently working on a painting series that explores the contemporary family portrait. Isabella is excited to continue artistic collaboration through the Miller Arts Scholars Program.
