Grant Description
Renting amps, while possible, is not sustainable because long-term fees add up quickly, and borrowing from friends has proven unreliable since they often need their own gear for their shows. Owning a gig-worthy amp would eliminate these limitations, enabling me to play live shows more consistently.

Grant Description
I will write, record, and produce a pop E.P. (a collection of 4-6 pop songs) and release it on all streaming services in January 2025. The primary focus of this project will be to further develop my skills as a producer, which include curating unique sonic palettes, creating impactful mixes, recording live instrumentation, and optimizing my workflow. Additionally, I want to elevate my songwriting by incorporating jazz vocabulary into my chord progressions and melodies and writing lyrics that present authentic narratives. I am requesting funding for equipment that will enhance my ability to make songs from home.

Grant Description
I plan to write, record, and produce a pop album, and release it on all streaming platforms in Spring 2026. Additionally, I’ll be traveling to Nashville, Tennessee, to network and meet with professionals in the music industry. The two main goals of this project are: 1) to refine my songwriting and composition skills, and 2) to gain insight into the realities of pursuing music professionally. I am requesting $3,000 to cover living expenses in Nashville and purchase a new electric guitar.

Henry Boland is a singer-songwriter and producer, majoring in Psychology and Music. Throughout elementary and middle school he found himself singing in musicals and local coffee shops, but it wasn’t until moving to El Salvador during his junior year of high school that he began pursuing music more seriously. He set about recording pop songs in his bedroom while teaching himself music theory and guitar. Since arriving at UVA, he has taken advantage of as many opportunities as possible to develop as a musician and expand his influences. Currently, Henry produces songs, performs at local venues, takes guitar and vocal lessons, and is part of a chamber jazz ensemble. He is incredibly grateful to be a Miller Arts scholar and can’t wait to engage more with the community.
