Grant Description
The Charlottesville Ballet offers open company class every weekday at 10am. I’d like to attend this class every Friday morning for the remainder of the semester. Although I am a dance minor and would love to take class with the department, my class and rehearsal schedule as a drama major does not allow for it at this time. Each ballet class costs 19 dollars with my student discount which will add up, making it beyond what is affordable on my student budget. I am asking for 200 dollars to fund tuition and gas expenses over the course of the semester.

Grant Description
My goal is to attend the Spring 2018 Southeastern Theater Conference (SETC) in Mobile, Alabama and audition as a dancer. I have been training in ballet and contemporary for years, but I have had little exposure to the styles that are highly sought by musical theatre companies. Dancers at musical theatre auditions are frequently asked to audition in character shoes as well as perform basic tap combinations. In order to compete against dancers with more training and audition opportunities, I have to diversify my abilities and prove that I am a malleable, versatile choice for hire. I want to remake my dance audition reel (which is out of date) with the additions of work in both character and tap shoes to show versatility. This reel can then be sent to theaters that are too far away to audition for shows in person.

From June 13th to July 21st, I will take three classes per day, four days per week. On top of regularly scheduled classes, there are dozens of other classes, workshops, and performances to attend on the other three days of the week. I’ll be dancing constantly, exposing myself to different styles and cultural influences while making connections from every corner of the dance world.

A Summer at the American Dance Festival

Heidi Waldenmaier started dancing when she was only 5 years old at her local ballet school in Onancock, Virginia. The ESO Arts Center was her home for the next 13 years where she studied classical ballet and performed twice a year. During the summer, she would go to ballet intensives at various schools, including The Joffrey Ballet, American Ballet Theater, The Rock School, and Richmond Ballet. In high school, she volunteered as the choreographer for the Nandua Middle School Theater Company for 4 productions. In 2014, she joined draMAStic danceworks, a contemporary dance company, as an intern and performed alongside professionals in Footwork & Footlights and The Remarkable Voyages O’Molly Reed. She was in Broken Toys, a collaborative dance film with Rawhide Theater Company and draMAStic danceworks. At UVA, she performed in the Fall Dance Concert during her first semester and joined the University Dance Club for her second semester. She worked at The Lost Colony, an outdoor drama in Manteo, North Carolina, as a dancer during the summer of 2017. Although dance is her first love, Heidi is involved in the arts in other ways as well. She interned as the assistant stage manager and scenic at The North Street .
