Grant Description
Combining my interest in new media and knowledge of the Adobe Suite with this newfound interest in photography, I have produced a number of vibrant, otherworldly images which I would like to reproduce in the form of high quality color prints. The process of color printing is very expensive, but would enable me to submit these works to galleries and other contests in the Charlottesville area.

Grant Description
I have several ideas for drawings that I believe would translate well to paintings. While I have never worked extensively in this medium, I am eager to explore and experiment, particularly within the world of acrylics and watercolors. The materials needed to get started with painting (an easel, canvases, brushes, the paint itself, etc.) can be expensive, which is why this Minigrant would be essential.

Grant Description
My proposed project would be a series of three short films (each 2-5 minutes in length) which would expand upon this series of drawings. Using paint, costumes, and a variety of props, each film would seek to transform a human body into an other worldly, fantasy creature whose external form would embody the mental state of the character themselves, and would explore different aspects of spending time alone.

Grant Description
Using a mix of film and digital cameras, I would like to conduct a series of environment-oriented film studies. This would involve travel to a variety of both rural and urban places. I am particularly interested in the ways that nature and technology come together, so would seek out spaces in which industrial and natural forces meet head on. The final products of this project would be two or three observational films, between six and ten minutes each.

Kia Wassenaar is a writer and artist from Charlottesville, Virginia. Growing up, her love of science fiction, fantasy, and magical realist literature kept her rooted in the creative world, and sparked an early interest in writing, which she continued to pursue throughout her youth. She studied songwriting at the Young Writer’s Workshop for three summers in high school, and returned in the summer of 2017 to teach. Influenced by a desire to tell stories, much of her creative life has centered around the merging of art and writing. While she is interested in a wide range of mediums, especially drawing, she has found that the energetic nature of filmmaking provides the best space for her interests to converge. At UVA, Kia is studying English and Studio Art with a concentration in cinematography. She is eager to explore more within the world of digital art and music production, and hopes to incorporate a variety of new media into her work.
